SROA Selects ASRT to Manage Its Daily Operations

Nov. 4, 2001

At its annual meeting here today, the Society for Radiation Oncology Administrators announced that it has selected the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, based in Albuquerque, N.M., to manage its business operations.

SROA President John Felton said the ASRT will handle SROA’s day-to-day administrative details, such as maintaining the member database, processing member dues and tracking CE credits for SROA members. “This will free the SROA Board of Directors and committees to concentrate on more long-term, strategic issues,” said Mr. Felton, who is president and chief executive officer of Northern Rockies Cancer Center in Billings, Mont.

Founded in 1983, the SROA represents more than 500 members active in radiation oncology management. The association promotes the field of radiation oncology administration and provides its members with professional development opportunities and educational programs.

Mr. Felton said the SROA Board of Directors carefully reviewed ASRT’s mission, capabilities, structure and resources before selecting it to provide management services to SROA. “The SROA issued a request for proposals, and several companies expressed interest in providing our management services,” said Mr. Felton. “We chose ASRT because we were impressed by its commitment to knowledge management and quality improvement, as well as by the background and experience of its staff members. We also feel that ASRT’s focus on developing the radiologic science work force is compatible with SROA’s mission to provide proactive solutions for cancer care delivery.”

Mr. Felton emphasized that the SROA and the ASRT will remain separate, autonomous organizations. “The SROA will continue to be guided by its own Board of Directors, committees and members, as will the ASRT. The two organizations might collaborate on projects where there is a mutual interest, as they always have, but for the most part they will function independently of one another.”

Under the three-year management agreement, which begins Jan. 1, 2002, ASRT will provide:

  • Membership services, including maintaining the SROA member database and Web site, distributing the quarterly SROA newsletter, and responding to all member inquiries.
  • Financial management services, including processing member dues, managing SROA bank accounts, preparing quarterly financial statements and assisting the SROA treasurer with budget preparation.
  • Meeting and conference planning services, including preparing and distributing meeting brochures, working with convention center and hotel personnel, and handling registration for the SROA annual conference.

“The ASRT is excited by this opportunity to help the SROA fulfill its strategic objectives,” said ASRT Chief Executive Officer Lynn May. “Our goal is to be service-oriented and member-focused. We have credentialed employees working in every department, from degreed accounting staff to Microsoft-certified database administrators. Our staff will provide SROA members with quality customer service and exceed their expectations for responsiveness, accuracy and efficiency.”

The ASRT, which represents more than 92,000 members, is the world’s oldest and largest association for radiologic technologists. The SROA is the only external association managed by the ASRT, although Mr. May said the society is considering offering its management services to other radiologic science organizations.

The SROA previously was managed by the Radiological Society of North America, based in Chicago. Mr. May said the ASRT is working with RSNA representatives to ensure a smooth transfer of SROA’s electronic data as well as paper files. “The transition should appear seamless to SROA members,” he said.

Effective Jan. 1, the new SROA mailing address will be P.O. Box 51687, Albuquerque, NM 87181-1687, and the toll-free telephone number will be 866-458-7762.
